Sudha Kongara, the director, who had written the story for the movie, had also co-written the screenplay with Shalini Ushadevi. Sudha Kongara is a noted director known for Mitr – My Friend, Drohi, Irudhi Suttru (Hindi remake ‘Saala Khadoos’ and Telugu remake ‘Guru’), Tamil anthology film Putham Pudhu Kaalai (Ilamai Idho Idho), and Paava Kadhaigal.
It was on the eve of Republic Day this year, the news that elated all cinema lovers, particularly the Suriya fans, came out. Rajsekar Pandian of 2D Entertainment, one of the producers of the movie, shared the news on Twitter that Soorarai Pottru had made it to the Oscars (78th Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles). This tweet was received with awe from the fans. The movie was selected to contest under General Category in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and other categories, and that it has been made available to be viewed in the Academy Screening Room for the Academy Members.
The movie Soorarai Pottru was produced by Suriya and Guneet Monga, under the banner of 2D Entertainment and Sikhya Entertainment, and was narrated by the actor R. Madhavan.
The character of Suriya as Nedumaaran Rajangam (Maara) is loosely based on Captain Gopinath. Aparna Balamurali acts as Sundari “Bommi” Nedumaaran, Maara’s wife. Suriya essays the character of one who fulfills his dream of starting a budget airline for people belonging to all classes of the society.
The movie besides having Suriya and Aparna Balamurali in the lead, has Paresh Rawal as the antagonist, Urvashi as Pechi, Maara’s mother, Mohan Babu, Karunas, Vivek Prasanna, Krishnakumar Balasubramanian, Achyuth Kumar, Kaali Venkat, Prakash Belawadi, Vishalini, Dan Dhanoa, R. S. Shivaji, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, and Varsha Nair as a pilot (in the end credits scene). The actors, from the lead actors to the supporting actors, had given an exemplary and stellar performance. Not just acting, even the execution of the movie from the story, screenplay and direction has been outstanding.
‘‘Soorarai Pottru’’ is based on Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey by G. R. Gopinath. Captain Gopinath found the low budget airline, Air Deccan. Through this airline, he had realized the common man’s dream to fly for 1 rupee. Captain Gopinath is a Retired Captain (Indian Army), Author and Politician.
Soorarai Pottru is the first Tamil movie to be released directly on the OTT platform, Amazon Prime, on November 12th. The movie after its release on the platform received positive reviews from all corners, including critics.
Soorarai Pottru can be added to those movies which are truly the pride of Indian Cinema, and can be displayed at a wider screen globally.
